Boyne Capital partners with Breakthrough Miami and Olympic Gold Medalist to teach Miami scholars to swim

Miami, FL – (October 13, 2017) This summer, Boyne Capital (“Boyne” or the “Firm”) partnered with local organization, Breakthrough Miami and Olympic Gold Medalist, Ashleigh Johnson, to teach Miami Scholars to swim. Ashleigh Johnson, her sister Chelsea and a group of volunteer students from Ransom and Gulliver have partnered with Breakthrough Miami to develop a “learn to swim” program.  The goal: ensuring water safety FOR ALL.

Derek McDowell, Boyne’s Managing Partner, said, “We were delighted to support Ashleigh and Chelsea Johnson in their effort to teach 120 kids to be water safe.”

The Breakthrough Miami Swim Program by the Johnson Sisters is a 3-week intensive program (45 min per day M-F) designed by the Johnsons. It ran from June 20 to July 7 at the Breakthrough Miami program on the Ransom and Gulliver campuses.

Breakthrough Miami is a program for highly motivated students from underserved communities.  The program is designed to provide academic enrichment as well as the tools and opportunities needed to ensure these students graduate high school on time, attend college and achieve their most ambitious goals!  The Breakthrough program operates on Saturdays during the schoolyear and for 6 weeks in the summer on the generously donated campuses of local independent schools: Ransom Everglades, Gulliver Schools, Miami Country Day School, Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart, Palmer Trinity as well as the University of Miami.  The Swim Program by the Johnson sisters begins this year at Ransom and Gulliver and will expand to all campuses next year.  Breakthrough considers swimming a crucial life skill. It not only opens a whole new world to these kids, but in a place like Miami, it can save a life.

Ashleigh Johnson is the goalie for the USA Women’s water polo team and led them to a gold medal in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. She was the first and only Black Water Polo Player on the US team.

Ashleigh and Chelsea Johnson were born and raised in Miami in the Redland. Their mother made sure they learned to swim at a young age. The girls attended Ransom Everglades high school, played on varsity swimming and water polo teams where they won state titles in both sports.  They also played club water polo on the Gulliver Riptides team. Ashleigh just graduated from Princeton University in June and Chelsea will be a senior there. Both girls play on Princeton’s Division I Water Polo Team.

The Johnsons have collaborated with 4 lead students at the host schools to help develop, staff and coordinate the program. Maggie McDowell is the president of the Breakthrough Club at Ransom Everglades and Nico and Kyla Valls are Water polo and Swim Team members respectively.  Carolina Baigorri is the President of the Breakthrough Club at Gulliver.
